My artwork is all
based on my compulsive collecting of rubbish which is impulsive yet intuitive. The main things I make is
my beasts, assembled over a long period, added to as I find.
This process influences or rather conditions
the way I work: it enables me to use what I collect from the roadside,
discarded, unwanted, worthless material and transform it into artwork .
It was once said that
I am able to make ‘the mundane to become extraordinary, the insignificant and
overlooked to become iconic, the randomly accumulated totemic’.
Only recycled
materials are used my artwork. The sculptures are formed from a ritual process
of construction; added to over a period of time as objects are found; a merging
of everyday objects and primordial beasts
I always make do with whatever is at hand - bits and pieces are given a new uncharacteristic twist and change of aspect to take on new meaning. As a bricoleur I perhaps have a special freedom, but also a lack of freedom as what I collect is restricted by a lack of control reliant on a chance encounter; my materials are the debris of society. I attempt to lift the objects I collect out of their physical existence and incorporate them into my practice.
